Jamie Vardy could be 'blocked' from Wrexham transfer after being involved in 'horrendous' incident which angered the club

The Leicester City striker confirmed he will be leaving the Foxes at the end of the season, earlier this week.

Jamie Vardy could be ‘blocked’ from signing for Wrexham after what he did while playing against them.

Vardy, 38, confirmed he will leave Leicester City after 13 years at the club on Thursday (April 24).

Leicester City Chairman, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, said: “Jamie is unique. He is a special player and an even more special person. He holds a place in the hearts of everyone connected to Leicester City, and he certainly has my deepest respect and affection. I am endlessly grateful for everything he has given to this Football Club.”

So, what’s next for the former England international?

After Leicester’s 1-0 defeat against Liverpool on April 20, former Man Utd captain and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville suggested that Vardy could move to a Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

“He’s obviously lost a yard [of pace], but I think there are opportunities now that exist in America or in other parts of the world where you can go and play, you can enjoy yourself,” Neville explained.

However, League One side Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are currently favourites to sign him on a free transfer come the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

But he may not be welcome at STōK Cae Ras.

In the 2011/12 season, Vardy was leading the line for Fleetwood Town in the National League and faced the Red Dragons in a 1-1 draw, which proved pivotal to the Cods’ promotion while Wrexham missed out.

During the game, Vardy produced a strong challenge on Nat Knight-Percival, with Wrexham’s then-manager Andy Morrell incensed by the tackle and the fact that the forward avoided a red card.

"We played well and we stood up,” Morrell told BBC Sport after the match. "Thought it was two very good teams going head-to-head trying to win the game.

"I'm disappointed with a point really because I thought we could have nicked the three.

"There should've been a sending off, and it was horrendous from (Jamie) Vardy. He left the floor with two feet and Nat (Knight-Percival) could've got seriously injured."

Vardy gave his thoughts on his time at the Foxes in a statement posted to the club's website on Saturday (April 26) morning.

“I’ll be devastated on the day when it is the last [game], but good things, they come to an end,” said Vardy. “It’s going to be one of those emotional days. Who knows which way that can go. If you ask anyone, I’m not really an emotional guy. Nothing like that ever comes across with me, but when you’ve been somewhere for so long, and it is time to say goodbye, you just never know what your personal reaction is going to be.”
