Jamie Carragher has furiously slammed Liverpool's attempt to sign Romeo Lavia, branding his old side's pursuit 'embarrassing'.
Jurgen Klopp has already reinforced his midfield ahead of the new Premier League season by snapping up Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
But following the departures of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, Liverpool remain in the market for new midfielders before the transfer window slams shut.
The German boss has set his sights on Southampton's Lavia, with the club lodging a bid of £45 million.

However, the Championship club have rejected Liverpool's proposal as they hold out for £50 million for one of their prized assets.
Liverpool's pursuit of Lavia has not gone down well with Carragher, who hit out at the club and asked why they are not in for Brighton's Moises Caicedo.
"This is embarrassing," he tweeted. "Liverpool for years now have got deals done quickly with no fuss.
"If you don’t think he’s worth 50M move on, if you really want him pay it. Also not sure why LFC aren’t in for Caicedo, yes it’s a lot of money but Liverpool got big money for JH/FAB."

Lavia was an unused substitute in the Saints' win over Sheffield Wednesday last Friday in their Championship opener.
He joined the club last summer from Manchester City and made 29 appearances in the Premier League.
The 19-year-old isn't the only Championship star Liverpool are thought to be keeping tabs on ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Merseyside team are reportedly also interested in Leicester City's Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, who bagged a brace in his side's win over Coventry last weekend.
But some Liverpool fans aren't convinced the Leicester player is the right fit for the club.
