Tottenham have failed in their attempt to sign Yannick Carrasco in a shock deadline day move from Atletico Madrid.
According to Foot Mercato, both Tottenham and Newcastle were in dialogue with Carrasco’s agent Pini Zahavi over a potential move for the Belgium international.
Carrasco has a reported release clause of €60m (£49.9m) in his contract with Atletico and both English clubs were said to be willing to meet that figure.
However, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has ruled out a January move for Carrasco and claims a deadline has now passed for clubs to activate his release clause.
He tweeted: “Tottenham among clubs to explore #DeadlineDay move for Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco but too late & no chance.
“#Atleti may sell 28yo Belgium winger in summer but not now + deadline for release clause expired in recent days.”
The Daily Telegraph journalist Jason Burt added: “Understand Tottenham Hotspur have failed in an attempt to sign Yannick Carrasco.
“Atletico Madrid insist the Belgium international is not for sale today.”
Carrasco is currently in his second spell at Atletico Madrid, having rejoined the Spanish giants in 2020 from Chinese Super League club Dalian Professional.
He was part of the Atletico squad that won the La Liga title last season but has found the current campaign more difficult, scoring just twice in 29 appearances in all competitions.
Tottenham were interested in signing the winger, who was previously linked with their rivals Arsenal in 2019 prior to his move to China.
But he is now set to remain at the Wanda Metropolitano.
It is another frustrating failure in the transfer market for Tottenham, who are yet to make a single signing this month after missing out on a number of targets.
Spurs had hoped to sign Luis Diaz from Porto but the Colombia international would instead join Liverpool in a £37.5m transfer.
Tottenham were also linked with Adama Traore but Barcelona would beat them to the former Wolves winger, signing him on loan ahead of a permanent deal this summer.
Meanwhile, Ollie Tanner - who plays for seventh division side Lewes - turned down a move to Tottenham after being unable to agree personal terms.
However, Antonio Conte’s side are hoping to complete deals for Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur before the window closes.
According to Sky Sports News, Kulusevski is expected to arrive on loan, with Spurs having an option to sign him permanently, while Bentancur will cost around £20m.
