World Cup referee brandishes record 10 red cards in a single game

When the game finished, Boca had just four players left on the pitch while Racing had eight.

One referee over in Argentina has set the new record for the amount of red cards brandished in a single football match.

Match official Facundo Tello, who is one of the referees heading to Qatar to officiate at the World Cup, went to the back pocket a whopping 10 times.

The sending off spree took place during Argentina’s Trophy of Champions Final, which saw Racing Club secure a wild 2-1 win over Boca Juniors.

Incredibly, Boca had SEVEN players sent off, while Racing had three.

It made for truly chaotic scenes, the sort of which that us neutrals absolutely love.

The trouble started when Carlos 'Charly' Alcaraz scored a winner for Racing Club in the last minute of extra time and celebrated in front of the Boca Juniors fans completely unfazed by the hundreds of bottles thrown in his direction.pic.twitter.com/LWRdujolW9

With the game deep into extra time, tensions inside the stadium boiled over when Racing Club's Carlos Alvarez scored a glancing header to win the game for his side in the final minute.

Wheeling away in celebration, Alvarez took his shirt off and made a beeline for the Boca fans, who retaliated by throwing bottles in his direction.

The Boca players also took exception to the celebrations too, confronting Alvarez by grabbing him and pinching his ears.

From there, Alcaraz himself and his Racing Club teammate Jonathan Galvan were given their marching orders.

On top of that, five Boca players were also sent for an early shower for their involvement in the melee.

Baring in mind that by this point, there had already been three red cards in the match.

What’s that? Oh, nothing. Just the ten red cards between Boca and Racing last night. pic.twitter.com/gyN5siQmel

This is the most South American football thing I've ever seen. Seven red cards and ten minutes of injury time onto extra-time. pic.twitter.com/bHbZN8zbWe

There's really no unfunny way for these red cards to be graphically represented https://t.co/N1WEkWVnJl pic.twitter.com/JDT8FXZseR

The mass exodus meant the game finished with just four Boca players and eight Racing Club players on the pitch.

Tello made history too, it seems, as his 10 sendings off became the record for the most red cards shown in a football match.

It's like something out of FIFA 2002 on PlayStation where you and a mate played 'who can get the game abandoned first'.
