After missing out on the signing of Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid were pursuing a deal for Darwin Núñez before Liverpool swooped in.
That’s according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano who claimed on his YouTube channel that Real were “really interested” in Núñez who was “one of the strikers wanted by Real Madrid.”
If it weren’t for issues concerning his passport, the Uruguay international could very well have ended up in the Spanish capital this summer.

Romano revealed that because Núñez “has no European passport” for Real it “would not be possible to register Darwin Núñez.” Negotiation was thus “impossible.”
Liverpool fans will be hoping Real’s loss is their club’s gain after Jürgen Klopp then uncharacteristically chose to throw the bag at Núñez.
He eventually joined in a deal worth £85.5 million, surpassing the £75 million spent on Virgil Van Dijk

As for Real, it is unclear whether they’d still like to pursue a deal for a forward this summer after missing out on Mbappé and Núñez.
They’ve already made one big signing this summer, beating Liverpool to Aurelien Tchouameni’s signature, and that could well be that in terms of incomings at the Spanish club.
Juxtaposing Liverpool, Real Madrid have seemingly chosen to postpone their pursuit of a new star forward, preferring to sign a midfielder instead.
Liverpool, of course, have signed Darwin Núñez to replace Sadio Mané, and a potential move for Jude Bellingham looks like it’ll occur next summer.

Real Madrid’s approach to their summer business has been intriguing.
Off the back of winning the Champions League, Carlo Ancelotti clearly feels his team have enough firepower, opting against signing an alternative to Kylian Mbappé.

If an opportunity were to arise to sign a new attacker, Real may well take it, but right now Ancelotti seems content with his squad options.
On the flip side, Darwin Núñez will be hoping he can acclimatise to the Premier League quickly and not lose any sleep over missing out on a move to Madrid.
