Spurs player booed relentlessly during Everton clash and fans have worked out exactly why

One Spurs star was booed by Everton fans from the first minute at Goodison Park.

Tottenham star Son Heung-min was booed by fans with his every touch of the ball in the first half against Everton - and fans have worked out exactly why.

Son was named in the starting XI by Ange Postecoglou as Spurs looked to win their first Premier League game since a 5-0 victory over Southampton on December 15.

But the afternoon got off to the worst possible start as Dominic Calvert-Lewin worked a shooting opportunity inside the box before firing the ball past Antonin Kinsky.

They almost made it 2-0 when Idrissa Gueye's 18-yard effort struck the post after Kinsky got a touch on it.

And Everton did extend their advantage on 30 minutes when Iliman Ndiaye fired an effort into the roof of the net.

And an own goal from Archie Gray - in which the ball inadvertently deflected off his head - made it 3-0 shortly before half-time.

Spurs will no doubt have been rueing an earlier missed opportunity from Son, whose low effort was denied by Jordan Pickford.

Fans noticed that the forward was being constantly booed by Everton fans whenever he touched the ball in the first half.

And they are convinced that it is down to a tackle on former Everton midfielder Andre Gomes in November 2019, which left the Portuguese international with a dislocation and fracture to his ankle.

Son would later apologise for the tackle, stating that he was 'really sorry'. He was sent off for the incident on the field but the FA later overturned the decision.

The red card was shown by Martin Atkinson for serious foul play, but a claim of wrongful dismissal by Spurs was overturned on appeal.

Gomes missed nearly four months of action with the injury and returned in February 2020. He left Everton in the summer to join Ligue 1 side Lille after a successful loan spell last season.

Reacting to the boos, one fan wrote: "Everton fans still booing Son for the Andre Gomes injury, it was a freak accident."

Another said: "Everton fans still booing Son."

And a third added: "Everton fans still boo Son over Gomes, even though replays showed he wasn't actually involved."
