Jamie Carragher has been slammed for a joke he made about Tottenham’s Cristian Romero during the club’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.
On Tuesday Spurs fell to a costly 2-0 loss against Manchester City in a strange, tepid atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A win would have kept the north Londoners’ top-four hopes alive but handed the initiative in the Premier League title race to bitter rivals Arsenal.

And when Phil Foden beat Romero in a 50-50 challenge in the build-up to City’s opening goal, Carragher made a bold joke at the Argentine’s expense.
On commentary, the Liverpool legend mockingly suggested Romero might have been holding back from his usually tenacious playing style to ensure Arsenal lost out in the title race. He then joked that Romero’s neighbour could be a Gooner.
Those comments did not go down well with fans on social media.
Writing on X, formally Twitter, one person said: “Are Carragher and Neville really suggesting that Romero let himself get beaten? Sky Sports need to reel them in.”

Another wrote: “Did Jamie Carragher just question if Romero’s neighbour is an Arsenal fan, implying he’s doing them a favour? Is that questioning the integrity of a professional football player?”
One fan added: “Sky Sports what did Carragher just say about Romero and Arsenal after his poor tackle…and then tried to talk around it…he’s disgusting!!”
“Carragher suggesting Romero is match-fixing on LIVE TV is embarrassing,” another supporter complained.

A fifth fan said: “Not sure how Neville and Carragher can slate Romero for losing that 50-50 after they slaughtered him for over-aggression up to now. Either let him break legs or zip it.”
City ultimately claimed the victory, with Haaland doubling his side’s lead from the penalty spot after Jeremy Doku was fouled by Pedro Porro.
Pep Guardiola’s men now sit two points clear of Arsenal at the Premier League summit, with a game against West Ham on the final day standing between them and a fourth successive title. Arsenal, meanwhile, take on Everton.
Tottenham’s fight for a Champions League spot is now over, with Aston Villa sealing fourth place.
