Paul Pogba’s £89m move to Man Utd named the biggest-ever Premier League transfer flop

Over the past couple of years Premier League teams have been splashing the cash and breaking transfer records

Over the past couple of years Premier League teams have been splashing the cash and breaking transfer records to bring players into the division. However, not all transfers have been successful and fans have decided that Paul Pogba’s £89m move from Juventus to Man United was the worst.

Fans of all 20 Premier League sides were asked to vote on the players that have disappointed throughout the years in the top division. The full list of Premier League flops was revealed as part of the Sky Bet Fan Hope Survey for 2023.

The Red Devils re-signed Pogba in the summer of 2016 for a then world record after initially being able to leave the Old Trafford outfit for free back in 2012. However, in 2022 the superstar midfielder returned to Turin on a free transfer once again.

During his second spell at Man United, Pogba was in the media for all the wrong reasons and it was reported that he was clashing with manager Jose Mourinho. Even after Mourinho’s departure he failed to find consistency under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

22% of the fans surveyed agreed that due to the finances involved and lack of consistency from the Frenchman was enough to vote him as the biggest Premier League transfer flop.

In second place with 19% of the votes was another player returning to a team he played for during his younger years, this time in the form of Romelu Lukaku. In August 2021, Chelsea broke their transfer record by signing the Belgium striker for £97.5m from Inter Milan, making him their highest paid player at the club.

During his time at Chelsea, Lukaku was also disciplined for giving an unauthorised interview to Sky Sports Italia in which he admitted he was not happy and focussed negatively on manager Thomas Tuchel.

The 29-year-old only managed eight goals in 26 Premier League games during the 2021/22 season, he was then able to leave Chelsea to join Inter Milan on a season-long loan but has now returned to the West London club.

The bronze medal for the biggest Premier League transfer flop voted by fans goes to Harry Maguire. The England defender moved to Man United from Leicester in 2019 for £80m.

Even though the centre-back became club captain at Old Trafford, he has been singled out by pundits and fans alike for his disappointing performances in the famous shirt over recent years
