Matt Le Tissier has left his ambassadorial role at Southampton following backlash for tweets related to the ongoing war in Europe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The 53-year-old, who was sacked by Sky Sports and the Soccer Saturday show last year, took to Twitter to confirm he was quitting his position as an ambassador of Saints, where he spent the entire of his professional playing career.
He said it was "important to take this step today to avoid any confusion" but stressed he "will always remain a fan and supporter".

"To all the fans of SFC. I have decided to step aside from my role as an ambassador of SFC.
"My views are my own and always have been, and it’s important to take this step today to avoid any confusion.
"This does not affect my relationship with and love for my club, and I will always remain a fan and supporter of everything Saints.
"I can, however, see that due to recent events it’s important to separate the work I believe in from my relationship with the club I have supported and played for most of my life.

In recent times, Le Tissier has become extremely active on Twitter and shared a conspiracy theory claiming that the media are lying about the shocking ongoings in Bucha, where Ukrainian officials say hundreds of innocent civilians been found dead.
On Twitter, Le Tissier quote-tweeted a post from Unity News Network, which said "The media lied about Weapons of Mass Destruction. The media lied about Covid. The media lied about the Hunter Biden laptop. But honestly they are telling the truth about Bucha!"

His share simply said "This", accompanied by a emoji of a finger point down. He would later delete the tweet due to backlash, writing: "Deleted previous tweet as people as usual missing the point, the point was about the media manipulation but you knew that really".
Le Tissier has also regularly weighed in on the COVID-19 pandemic and caused a stir with his opinions.
