Manchester United are trying to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou, who is available on a free transfer in the summer.
The 22-year-old centre-back has made 80 appearances for Dortmund, including 7 in all competitions this season.
He joined the club for free from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, though Ralf Rangnick was desperate to bring him to RB Leipzig.
United's interim boss remains a big fan of the Frenchman, however and Foot Mercato say United have already been in contact with Zagadou's agent Moussa Sissoko.
Reporting on United's interest in the player, Fussball Transfers believe Rangnick is the ‘driving force’ behind the move as he tries to strengthen his squad.
Zagadou's deal at Signal Iduna Park is about to expire and he is able to sign a pre-contract with clubs abroad this month.
He and Dortmund have been in negotiations over a new contract but there is no word on the two parties being close to striking a deal.
Newcastle are also said to be keeping tabs on Zagadou, who represented France at Under-16 level through to U21s but hasn't become a full international.
Rangnick, who tasted defeat for the first time when United lost at home to Wolves on Monday, has been linked with a host of players.
One of the notable rumoured targets is at his former club Leipzig, with midfielder Amadou Haidara touted as a potential January signing.
While sporting director for both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, Rangnick brought Haidara to Germany in a £17 million transfer in 2019.
Haidara has a £33 million release clause in his contract and has already admitted to "dreaming" of playing for United.
In addition, Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves is attracting attention from United after an impressive display in the middle of the park at Old Trafford earlier this week.
A fee of more than £50 million is being talked about.
