"He will move..." - Man Utd star backed to leave Old Trafford after impressive World Cup

Former Scotland international and ITV commentator Ally McCoist has backed Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United following his impressive World Cup displays for England.

There were doubts raised over Maguire's level of participation at the tournament prior to it getting underway, with the 29-year-old having started just two games for United since early September due to injury.

But Maguire has performed at a high level for Gareth Southgate and England in major tournaments, and the Three Lions boss gave him a start in the opening group game against Iran.

The centre-back put in a strong display, and assisted Bukayo Saka for England's second goal in the 6-2 win. But there were concerns amongst fans when he was substituted on 70 minutes due to a suspected head injury, which was later revealed to be blurred vision.

Maguire, therefore, kept his place for the remaining games, and went on to keep three clean sheets alongside John Stones at the centre of defence.

He will now return to club football with United, although he is not guaranteed to be a first choice starter.

And McCoist believes he will move on to another club off the back of his World Cup showings.

McCoist on Harry Maguire future

Speaking to talkSPORT, McCoist said: "I don't think he may move. I'll go one further - I think he will move. He isn't going to hang around - he wants to play.

"I don't think there are any guarantees that he's going to march back into the Manchester United team, not in front of Varane and Martinez.

"Well, that's up for debate [who could sign him]. Clearly he will want to play. Straight away, off the top of my head, I'd say he's good enough for Spurs. Arsenal? Maybe not at this moment in time. But he's been one of England's best players at the World Cup."

United boss Erik ten Hag was asked about Maguire's future during a squad training camp in Spain, and stated that he had no interest in selling the defender unless he himself wanted to leave the club.

He said (quotes via ESPN): "It's clear he is good enough to play at the highest level. He has, for England, good games almost all the time.

"He had a period in Manchester where he performed badly. Then, of course, there are difficulties. But when he is working hard, he gets that confidence. You are seeing that with the way he is playing for England.

"We want him to bring it on the pitch for Manchester United. I expect that from him, the team knows what they expect from him.

"If he does that, he will be a great player for us."
