Man Utd have been voted as the team Premier League fans want to underperform the most this season, according to the results of a survey conducted by Sky Bet ahead of the new campaign.

Sky Bet’s Fan Hope Survey asked over 1,500 fans to vote on which Premier League team they would like to see underperform in the 2022/23 Premier League season, and although Man Utd haven’t won a trophy since 2017, fans from the rest of the league are still enjoying the downfall of the Red Devils since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013.

Whilst the blue side of Manchester were celebrating another Premier League title, their sixth since 2011, the red side were having to settle for a Europa League position after flirting with a top four spot all season.

Whether it’s due to the previous success of the club, the fanbase, or local rivalries, a fifth (20%) of fans surveyed voted for Man Utd as the team they hoped would underperform the most. Next in the list was their cross-city rivals Man City with 15% of the votes, followed by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in third place with 12%.

The survey results also highlighted which team was voted for the most by specific supporters. Leeds fans are the set of supporters who want to see Man United underperform the most with 51% of the fans surveyed voting for Erik ten Hag’s men. Thirty-six per cent of Manchester City fans and 33% of Liverpool fans were also in agreement with the Elland Road faithful.

The theme of disliking Man Utd continued in the survey with 72% of fans surveyed saying that Cristiano Ronaldo and co will not win another Premier League title in the next five seasons. The last time they won the league was in 2013 and according to Premier League fans they will have to wait even longer before adding a 14th league title to their trophy cabinet.

This is despite new boss Erik ten Hag and the Red Devils enjoying a relatively successful pre-season, even with the uncertainty of Ronaldo’s future and the potential arrival of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. With new signings such as Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez, Man United supporters themselves are optimistic that they can prove the fans wanting to see them underperform yet again wrong.

You can share which team you would like to see underperform in the Premier League this season by visiting the Sky Bet mini Fan Hope Survey.
