Manchester United fans were left confused by Anthony Martial's place in the team to face Wolverhampton Wanderers, as Marcus Rashford missed out.

United are in danger of losing out on a top four place in the Premier League, after back-to-back defeats to Brighton and West Ham United recently.

Liverpool's form has come at the wrong time for Erik ten Hag's side, with the Anfield outfit putting together a run of six wins on the bounce.

If United did miss out on Champions League football it would leave them horrendously out of pocket next year, and also facing huge embarrassment.

They certainly require their own run of form in the last four games of the league campaign, starting on Saturday afternoon against Wolves.

Unfortunately for Ten Hag's side, they will be without the injured Rashford, who has been by far and away their biggest source for goals this season.

With the England international missing from the game at Old Trafford, Anthony Martial was expected to take his place in the striker role.

However, when the team graphic for the game was released, the Frenchman was named as both a starter and on the bench, leaving some to scratch their heads.

"Martial starting & bench? This guy is unreal!", joked one fan.

"Good to see Martial on both Playing XI and bench," noted a second.

A third was looking forward to seeing the former Monaco man start and come off the bench, adding, "Martial on the bench and starting as well? Damn an active night for the lad."

A fourth supporter is more positive about Martial than many, replying, "Martial that good he starts and is on the bench!"

"Admin knows Martial belongs to the bench," commented another, thinking it was less a mistake and more for a particular reason.

And another reckons that two versions of the 27-year-old might be better, posting, "How can Martial be in the starting lineup whilst also being named as a substitute do we have more than one Martial can we combine them into one brilliant striker for the rest of the season please."

The forward has only scored four goals in the league this season, meaning that United fans would be questioning if two of him was an advantage or not.

As it happens, they needn't have worried, with United's social media team confirming afterwards that it was Anthony Elanga on the bench.

Whilst Rashford misses out, the good news for the fans is the return of Raphael Varane from injury, with the former Real Madrid player starting at centre-back.
