Sporting Lisbon's Matheus Nunes is set to join Wolves for a club record €45m (£38m) fee, but Liverpool made the decision not to sign him earlier in the window.
The midfielder has made 76 appearances in Portugal's Primeira Liga since moving over in 2019, scoring 7 goals.
The Merseyside club have been heavily linked with the 23-year-old all summer, but according to A Bola, the Reds made contact with Sporting weeks ago and decided not to “not to formalise any offer”.

The Portuguese report does not give any detail into why Liverpool didn't follow through with their interest, but it may be related to the high asking price for the player.
However, Jurgen Klopp's side may come to regret their decision not to acquire Nunes' services as they are suffering something of an injury crisis in midfield.
Thiago Alcantara went off with a problem in the Reds’ opening fixture against Fulham that will see him sidelined for several weeks, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones remain on the sidelines.

To add to this, the Liverpool engine room is ageing. Henderson and Thiago are on the wrong side of 30, and Fabinho is close to joining them.
The Premier League runners up would be wise to invest in this department sooner rather than later if they want to continue to challenge for the top trophies.
