Pep Guardiola consoles emotional Leroy Sane after the full-time whistle, he was 'distraught'

Pep Guardiola was spotted consoling an emotional Leroy Sane after last night's Champions League quarter-final clash between Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

Sane, who spent four years at the Etihad before joining Bayern in 2020, came up against his former side on Wednesday but ultimately came up short as an Erling Haaland goal put the two-legged tie to bed.

The Citizens secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 4-1 aggregate victory and after the full-time whistle, Sane bumped into his former boss in the Allianz Arena corridor.

As you can see from the pictures below, there was nothing but respect between the pair. In fact, it appears the German winger was in tears as he spoke to Guardiola.

Here's how fans reacted to the post-match pictures.

One said: "He still loves the club and Pep," while another commented: "On my knees for Sane back at the Etihad."

A third wrote: "Leaving City was his biggest mistake. Bayern was a backwards step."

A fourth added: "Wholesome. Sane doesn't seem like himself at the moment."

Sane has been through a tough time of late. After last week's first leg at the Etihad, it was widely reported that Sadio Mane punched the former Schalke winger after an altercation on the pitch.

Both players had to be separated by their Bayern teammates before Sane was then told to leave the dressing room.

In terms of his exit from Manchester City in the summer of 2020, Sane later explained that he rejected a contract offer from the Premier League side after being attracted by Bayern's plans.

Speaking to SportBild after completing the move, he praised former boss Guardiola but opened up about the main reasons behind his departure.

“It wasn’t easy," he said. "Pep Guardiola and this fantastic team were the reason why I moved to Manchester. But I wanted to do something new.

“The concept and the plans of FC Bayern were the best match for my ideas. That’s why I came to my decision.”

“The Bayern system really fits me perfectly. Wingers characterize Bayern’s game; that of course suits me very well. That was very much a key point for me.

“Of course I want to play, but I don’t demand to start every match. No player in the world can play every match and reach his highest level. I have my goals, but I’m zero-point-zero percent against rotation.

“It helps the team get some good freshness, give new impulses.”
