Jose Mourinho has decided his next signing to continue his Real Madrid rebuild after agreeing a deal for former Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva.

Mourinho's return to Real was confirmed after Florentino Perez was re-elected as Los Blancos president after seeing off the challenge of Enrique Riquelme.

And after a disappointing trophyless season which saw both Xabi Alosno and Alvaro Arbeloa lose their jobs, Real have wasted no time in making changes ahead of the next campaign.

With the blessing from Mourinho, Real activated the release clause of Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries and pounced to bring in Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate after he ran down his contract at Liverpool.

They then moved to bring in another free agent, with Silva reaching an agreement in principle to move to the Santiago Bernabeu according to Fabrizio Romano.

MARCA say that Mourinho personally requested the signing of compatriot Silva, who was also in discussions with Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, The Athletic have revealed that further midfield reinforcements are being targeted by Real but they have been knocked back by Paris Saint-Germain for both Vitinha and Joao Neves.

However, another option being considered is Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentina international, who joined Chelsea in a club-record £105 million switch from Benfica in 2023, has also been linked with Manchester City ahead of Enzo Maresca's expected appointment.

In March, Fernandez spoke of his interest in moving to Madrid during an interview and was punished with a two-game ban.

Chelsea's final day defeat to Sunderland was widely expected to be his final game for the club and former Blues midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged the club to offload Fernandez.

"Enzo Fernandez should go, you cannot keep a player happy if he wants to leave," Petit said, as per Goal.

"He did say that he wanted to leave and he was fined by the club. I know he's probably been one of the best players for Chelsea for the last two years, but you cannot be the captain of the team and have this kind of communication.

"Obviously he wants to leave the club, we are not stupid. I think he's been fed up and tired with what's going on at Chelsea. It's been a mess this season. Obviously he is targeted by Real Madrid. Real Madrid desperately needs to get some strong and powerful midfield players. I won't be surprised if he leaves the club and goes to Real Madrid or somewhere else."

West Ham's Mateus Fernandes is also another name being mentioned, with Real rivalling Manchester United for the former Southampton man.

Mourinho, who was first Real manager between 2010 and 2013, will officially begin his second reign on 13 July when pre-season begins.

He leaves Benfica after less than a season and the club will receive a record £13m in compensation as a result.
