Gareth Bale made a genuinely sad admission about his career as he stood next to Jose Mourinho

Gareth Bale made a genuinely sad admission about his career as he stood next to Jose Mourinho

In his prime, the former Spurs and Real Madrid winger was one of the very best.

Gareth Bale gave an insight into how his career in football is perceived by his eldest son as he spoke about that iconic Champions League final goal against Liverpool.

The 34-year-old former Real Madrid and Spurs winger announced his retirement from the game last year following a short stint with Major League Soccer side LAFC.

Bale, who enjoyed a trophy-laden 17-year career featuring five Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles, made 166 appearances for Spurs before winning the lot with Los Blancos.

After joining for a then-world record £85.3 million, he cemented himself in the history books with some important goals, including an iconic individual effort against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

He also netted arguably the greatest goal in Champions League history; an outrageous overhead kick that gave Madrid the lead in their 2018 final win over Liverpool.

Six years on from that moment and Bale spoke to TNT Sports about the goal.

As you can see from the footage above, Bale was stood next to his former manager Jose Mourinho when the famous overhead kick goal was broadcast to those watching at home.

"I actually haven't seen it for a while," he said. “My son recently got into football and he still doesn’t believe I was any good.”

He may have been one of the world's best players during periods of his career but based on the above comment, not everybody is convinced by the Welshman's achievements.

Bale's son, Axel, arrived into the world when his dad rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan in September 2020.

He returned to Madrid in 2021 but after a serious lack of first-team minutes, the former Southampton man joined Los Angeles FC on a 12-month deal. He only started two games for the club before retiring in 2023.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to Bale's comments.

One said: "He doesn't know his father is a legend," while a second commented: "That boy needs to know you were a good footballer, show him some clips."

A third wrote: "Play the boy some clips of you at Tottenham."

A fourth said: "Lol his son should know peak Bale was top five player in the world (in Messi, CR7 era) and close to Neymar."

A fifth added: "Amount of people saying 'he's not wrong', this TikTok generation is finished."
