Chelsea legend John Terry has revealed a former player grabbed him by the throat as a youngster after spending his bonus on a new car.

Terry spent over 20 years at Stamford Bridge and came through the club's academy system, making his debut as a teenager in 1998.

He'd make his first Champions League appearance a year later and decided to treat himself to a new car. That didn't go down well with Dennis Wise, who was captain at the time, and he demanded the youngster take it back.

Terry explained on The Footballers Guide to Football podcast: "He was club captain at the time.

"I remember I was in the first-team and got a Champions League bonus and I went out and stupidly bought a car with the bonus I was on.

"I was 19 at the time. I come in with my car and Wisey got me up round the throat in the corridor in front of everyone: 'Who do you think you are? Go and take the car back.'

"So he made me go and take the car back, which I lost money on, took me around and helped me find a house, buy a house, so it was the best bit of advice."

Wise was a no-nonsense pro and made his name as a part of Wimbledon's 'Crazy Gang' in the 80s.

He'd joined Chelsea in 1990 and spent 11 years at the club, becoming their most successful captain at the time.

Wise won two FA Cups, the League Cup and the UEFA Super Cup before moving to Leicester City in 2001.

Ironically, Terry overtook Wise as the Blues' most decorated skipper in the years that followed.

He went on to thank Wise for the lessons he was taught.

"I was embarrassed at the time but it was the best bit of advice that I could have had," the 42-year-old admitted.

"So I'm really grateful for all those little bits along the way, guiding the younger players, and he always not only had his eye on the first team but had an interest in the younger boys."

Terry made over 500 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions and won six FA Cups, five Premier Leagues, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.

The former Aston Villa man earned 78 caps for England and captained his country between 2006 and 2010.

He is now back at Chelsea in a coaching consultancy role in the academy and works as a pundit for beIN SPORTS.

Kalidou Koulibaly asked permission from Terry to take his iconic number 26, following his summer move from Napoli.
