Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have engaged in a public spat over Cristiano Ronaldo's shock transfer request at Manchester United.

Ronaldo has reportedly informed United that he wants to leave the club this summer if a suitable offer arrives, less than a year after rejoining the Red Devils from Juventus.

The Portuguese superstar managed 24 goals in all competitions last season but United finished the campaign without silverware, missing out on the Champions League after coming sixth in the Premier League.

Ronaldo's intention to leave is said to be driven by his desire to play Champions League football next season and a perceived lack of ambition by United in the transfer market this summer.

The news of his request has sent shockwaves across the football world and threatens to derail United's preparations for the new season.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has now twisted the knife by claiming he always expected Ronaldo's return to end badly for United.

"Ronaldo did exactly what I thought he would do, score goals but make the team worse," Carragher posted on Twitter.

"The transfer request also kills the idea he turned down Man City because of his love for Man United", followed by the crying-laughing emoji.

I get it , you’re full of yourselves but he can turn down City for United because he likes them more and still want to leave this summer. He left before but still loved the club . Enjoy Saturday night and your short period of success 👍 https://t.co/tafmauPCXq

Carragher's Sky Sports colleague, former United captain Gary Neville, immediately hit back on Twitter.

"I get it, you're full of yourselves but he can turn down City for United because he likes them more and still want to leave this summer. He left before but still loved the club," wrote Neville.

"Enjoy Saturday night and your short period of success," added Neville, referencing Liverpool's recent haul of trophies under Jurgen Klopp.

Carragher replied by calling Neville a clown using an emoji, mocking him for celebrating Ronaldo's return to the club last summer.

"City didn't want him you (clown face emoji) and you're the same fella who kept saying it was like Elvis had arrived in Manchester! Elvis has left the building," wrote Carragher.

In a nod to Carragher's Elvis Presley refence, Neville responded by posting the phrase a "little less conversation", signalling the end of their Twitter spat.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes is currently in talks with several clubs to try and find a potential buyer for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are among a number of clubs who have been linked with the Portugal captain.

However, it is believed Ronaldo is yet to receive a suitable offer that could convince him to leave Old Trafford.
