UEFA make embarrassing blunder over Euro 2024 player's nationality and it's caused a huge uproar

UEFA make embarrassing blunder over Euro 2024 player's nationality and it's caused a huge uproar

UEFA have been accused of making a mistake with a player’s birthplace.

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted UEFA’s blunder over a Euro 2024 player’s country of birth.

So far, Euro 2024 has delivered some memorable moments such as Austria clinching the top spot of Group D and Georgia’s famous 2-0 win over Portugal to seal their place in the round of 16.

The first quarter-final teams were decided on Saturday as Switzerland and host nation Germany sealed their place in the next round after beating Italy and Denmark respectively.

However, eagle-eyed fans have spotted an apparent mistake on UEFA’s official website.

It was spotted that UEFA listed Ukraine defender Maksym Talovierov’s country of birth as Russia.

However, according to United24 Media, Talovierov was in fact born in the city of Donetsk in Ukraine.

The website has since been updated with Talovierov's country of birth stating Ukraine.

SPORTbible has contacted UEFA for comment.

Ukraine’s tournament got off to the worst possible start after they were beaten 3-0 by Romania.

They then recorded a vital v2-1 victory over Slovakia to keep their hopes of reaching the round of 16 alive.

However, a 0-0 draw against Belgium in the last round of fixtures meant their tournament was over as they finished last in Group E.

Speaking after the match, Ukraine boss Serhiy Rebrov said: “We showed the character of our people. We need the support of Europe and we are part of Europe. It is very important for us to be represented here.

“Unfortunately we didn't do well. This is like in life, you make some mistakes and then it's very important how you react. I think we reacted well.”

He added: “We are very proud of the players. Everyone in Ukraine is unhappy with the score but there are no question marks for the players.

“It's very important to show that we are still alive, we are still fighting and we will not stop.”
