Trent Alexander-Arnold has inadvertently sent Gareth Southgate a message regarding his favourite position.
Liverpool right-back Alexander-Arnold has long been lauded among the best passers in world football. Indeed, he is only behind Liverpool team-mate Andy Robertson in the all-time ranking for the most assists from a Premier League defender.
The 25-year-old’s passing prowess, coupled with England’s wealth of talent at right back, has seen manager Gareth Southgate experiment by playing the Liverpool star on the right of a midfield three over the past year.
Though Alexander-Arnold’s best chance of starting this summer’s European Championships in Germany would be alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in midfield, he has told Gary Neville on the Overlap the position he favours in right-back.

Speaking on The Overlap via Sky Bet about which position he favours Alexander-Arnold said: “I’d say I still see myself as a right back,
“I see myself as someone who can probably play in both positions if needed. My focus, until I’m told otherwise by the Gaffer, is that I’m still a right back.
“I come inside and I play inside when we have the ball, but when you write the team sheet, I am a right back.”

Elsewhere, Alexander-Arnold insisted he owed “everything” to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, with the German set to leave the Reds in the summer.
He said: “Jurgen Klopp has been nothing but incredible.
“I owe everything to him as a player. I was thinking about this recently and the only thing you can ask for as a young player is an opportunity and what you can hope at 18/19, is that you’ve got a manager that’s willing to give you a chance, and I was fortunate enough to have that.
“Not only that, he put his arm around me and guided me through it, through the ups and downs, winning and losing games, and taking it game by game, because your first bad game you think you’re never going to kick a ball again, but he gives you that reassurance.”
