Spain player reveals he has been telling Rodri to leave Man City and join his club

A Spain player revealed he has been telling Rodri to leave Manchester City this summer.

Rodri has been a central cog in Spain’s run to the final of the European Championships, where they will play England on Sunday night.

The Spaniard is widely regarded among the best defensive midfielders in the world and has been touted among the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or.

And Real Madrid and Spain full-back Dani Carvajal admitted he has been trying to convince his international team-mate to join Los Blancos, upon the retirement of Toni Kroos.

During an interview with El Partidazo de COPE, Carvajal said: "Yes, without a doubt, I tell him every day: 'Leave Manchester, there is no sun, come to Madrid because we need you, and you are from here in Madrid'.

"He says: 'Yes, well, I have a contract, there are no clauses here.' It gives me pause, it gives me delay, but it would be the signing, without a doubt. Being Spanish, in Madrid... I think it would fit perfectly."

Rodri has won the Premier League four times at City, along with the Champions League and FA Cup.

And his manager, Pep Guardiola, believes he could play in any football generation. The City boss claimed in May that Rodri has the ability to play in Barcelona’s first European Cup-winning team under Johan Cruyff 32 years ago.

He quipped to TNT Sport: “He would be competing with me for a position and then he would've been in trouble.

“These players could play in any generation in teams across the world. They are too good to not be at that level.

“If I was the manager, I would pick myself but if it was Johan Cruyff and he was smarter than me - then it would be Rodri by far.”

On whether Rodri is undervalued, Guardiola added: “I have an opinion that the holding midfielder has to be behind the scenes; strikers, wingers and people upfront [take the limelight].

“He has no doubt about how he's appreciated in the team and in English football, so I wouldn't say it is unfair that the other nominees are there.

“Of course, it could've been Rodri or another seven players there, so he knows how good he is and we know how important and an excellent player [he is].”
