Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he was forced to stop playing a sport after sustaining injuries.

Reynolds, 48, is formerly known for his exploits as an actor and film producer but in 2021 took ownership of then-National League outfit Wrexham.

Since he and co-owner Rob McElhenney took control of the club, they have enjoyed success, with manager Phil Parkinson leading the club to back-to-back promotions over the past two seasons.

This season, with the team now playing in League One, they are chasing a third consecutive promotion.

Wrexham currently sit third in the division ahead of their top-of-the-table clash with league leaders Birmingham City at The Racecourse on Thursday evening.

Reynolds and co will no doubt be hoping the Welsh side can go right to the very top of the football pyramid in England. And now, football (or soccer as Reynolds may call it) is no doubt one of the actor’s favourite sports.

But he has revealed that he used to play another sport in an interview with Men in Blazers.

Host Roger ‘Rog’ Bennett explained how he knew that Reynolds played baseball before mentioning another sport, which is not commonly associated with North America.

“You gave rugby a go before you had to give it up after your six concussions,” said Bennett.

“You did occasionally play in goal… you said you stopped most of the balls with your face”

He then asked Reynolds “what type of athlete” he was during his high school days.

“I was small…I didn’t grow ‘til you know [later on] – I didn’t hit puberty until my early twenties,” said Reynolds.

“Just like God’s little joke on me.

“I was small up until the mid-way through 12th grade – the final grade of high school.”

He then revealed how “sport” was one of the only interests that he and his father shared. Before explaining how competing in sport was a way of gaining “validation” from his parents.

“That’s why I got six concussions, I would lead with my head to take someone out,” revealed the 48-year-old. “You know you were playing these kids who were 14 or 15 but they had thick Magnum PI-style moustaches.”

Reynolds, who also used to play Canadian football – a variation of American football – revealed how his teammates gave him the nickname ‘Lights-out Reynolds' due to his playing style.
