Roy Keane's brutal response to Ian Wright claiming he 'nearly died' in crash before Match of the Day episode

Roy Keane's brutal response to Ian Wright claiming he 'nearly died' in crash before Match of the Day episode

Wright was involved in a terrifying car crash in February, 2022.

Roy Keane gave a typically blunt response after Ian Wright opened up on a near-death experience he had before an episode of Match of the Day.

On the latest episode of Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, former United captain Keane called out Ian Wright for arriving late to filming.

The Arsenal legend explained that he had taken a cautious approach when travelling to the studio after a terrifying experience a few years earlier.

In February 2022, Wright was on his way to film Match of the Day in Manchester when his car lost control in wet conditions.

The former Arsenal star was being driven by his chauffeur at the time of the crash on a motorway and was fortunate to escape unscathed.

Explaining his late arrival, Wright said: "We had terrible rain on the motorway, we had to slow down! Two years ago, I nearly died! In the same kind of weather. I'm petrified when it starts raining."

Manchester United legend Keane responded: "You didn't nearly die! I hate when people exaggerate."

But Wright insisted: "So we're driving and [the driver] hit the brakes. He must be doing 60 or 70 [miles per hour] - the car's aquaplaned, it's hit the central reservation, spun around and we're facing that way [into oncoming traffic].

"That's enough to frighten you."

To which Keane bluntly responded: "You've got airbags."

Wright fired back: "There weren't airbags in the back."

To which Keane responded: "Oh right… you were probably watching The Godfather for the 50th time."

Wright left Match of the Day at the end of the 2023/24 season, ending his 27-year association with the programme.

"After my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years, I'll be stepping back from BBC MOTD at the end of this season," Wright said at the time.

"I feel very privileged to have had such an incredible run on the most iconic football show in the world," Wright said at the time.

"Anyone that knows my story knows how much the show has meant to me since I was a young boy. MOTD is my Holy Grail.

"On my first ever show, I told [presenter] Des Lynam, 'This is my Graceland'. It will always be my Graceland and I will always be watching."
