There were concerns that Real Madrid would pull out of Saturday’s (April 26) Copa del Rey final against Barcelona after they cancelled an open training session and press conference on Friday (April 25) – but who would step in?
Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to go head-to-head in Seville on Saturday evening in what promises to be a mouth-watering ‘El Clásico’ final.
However, Los Blancos’ participation in the fixture was plunged into doubt after they released a video on Real TV about Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, who will referee the game.

The video pointed out the fact that the Spaniard had never taken charge of such a high-profile game, as well as highlighting mistakes he had made previously.
The ref held a press conference and broke down in tears when explaining, “there are kids telling him [his son] that his father is a 'thief' and comes home crying, it's totally messed up”.
It appeared that Madrid were considering not playing in Saturday’s match, but they quickly debunked such reports by releasing a statement, which read: “In light of the rumours that have emerged in recent hours, Real Madrid CF announces that our team has never considered withdrawing from tomorrow's final.

"Our club understands that the unfortunate and inappropriate statements made by the referees designated for this match, made 24 hours before the final, cannot taint a sporting event of global significance that will be watched by hundreds of millions of people, and out of respect for all the fans who are planning to travel to Seville, and all those who are already in the Andalusian capital.

"Real Madrid believes that the values of football must prevail, despite the hostility and animosity that have been manifested once again today against our club by the referees appointed for the final."
But given the sensitive situation it would not be surprising if things changed. So who would play against Barca if Real Madrid did refuse to participate?

According to Spanish outlet Relevo, “Anyone who fails to appear or withdraws will not be able to participate in the next edition of the tournament".
However, Barca would not automatically be crowned champions and instead would face the team Madrid eliminated in the semi-finals, Real Sociedad - although this seems highly unlikely based on Madrid's statement.
