Wayne Rooney didn't hesitate when naming shock pick for his best Man Utd teammate

The Man Utd legend had no doubt in his mind.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed which of his former teammates he believes was the best.

Rooney is considered by many to be one of the greatest players ever to put on a United shirt, alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and Bobby Charlton.

The former captain made over 500 appearances for the Red Devils and played with several of the club's most notable players.

But when asked to name the best he had ever played with at United, Rooney offered an answer that will surprise many.

While appearing on rugby league legend Rob Burrow's podcast, seven, Rooney was asked who his favourite teammate at United was.

He replied: "Best teammate? I'd say Darren Fletcher, he's my best mate.

"There were a few - John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Michael Carrick - we were all really close. But Fletch was probably the one. We sat next to each other in the dressing room and shared really good moments on and off the pitch together. We're really good friends s I'd say Darren Fletcher is my best teammate and closest."

Rooney and Fletcher spent an impressive 11 years together at Old Trafford, with the Scotsman graduating from the academy to join the senior team just two years before Rooney joined the club from Everton.

In total, the two men played 228 matches together, with only six other players at United featuring alongside Rooney more than Fletcher.

The pair remained from the start of their time together at the club right up until Fletcher departed in 2015.

However, Fletcher later returned to United several years later as, after retiring from playing in 2019, the now 40-year-old came back to his former club as a youth coach in 2020.

He was later promoted to the role of technical director but in April was replaced by Jason Wilcox, with Fletcher staying on as a first team coach.

While speaking on the podcast, Rooney also detailed which of his United teammates was his last favourite, saying: "My worst team-mate... there are a lot more than you'd probably think! On the pitch, the toughest one was Nani. He was frustrating to play with."
