Rory McIlroy makes brutal comment about Man Utd following Masters win just hours after Roy Keane dig

McIlroy poked fun at Man Utd following his victory.

Rory McIlroy couldn't help but poke fun at his boyhood club Manchester United after their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United coincided with his victory at Augusta.

The Northern Irishman finally claimed his career Grand Slam over 10 years since his last major after defeating Justin Rose in a one-hole playoff.

Rose had put on a masterclass on the final day to take it to a playoff, but his Masters curse continued with yet another playoff defeat.

McIlroy is a known Manchester United fan, and celebrated his Open win in 2014 by taking the trophy to Old Trafford to showcase in front of the supporters.

Following his victory on Sunday, the 35-year-old was asked if he would do the same with his new green jacket and McIlroy took the opportunity to make light of his club's current form.

"If it can inspire some better play, absolutely," he joked.

McIlroy's historic victory came just hours after United suffered yet another Premier League defeat at St James' Park, making it 14 for the season.

With McIlroy being put through every emotion possible at Augusta, a visit to Old Trafford might be a good idea as Roy Keane labeled the players 'mentally weak'.

"It wasn't good enough in the second half from Man United," he said on Sky Sports.

"That's 14 league defeats now and we keep making excuses for the team, Man United are physically and mentally a weak team."

Masters win was 'relief not joy' for McIlroy

Following his win, McIlroy admitted that he had been feeling the pressure of going so long without a major title.

"It was all relief. There wasn't much joy in that reaction. It was all relief," he explained.

"The joy came pretty soon after that. But I've been coming here 17 years, and it was a decade-plus of emotion that came out of me there.

"At least 11 years, if not 14 years of pent-up emotion. It's very difficult. I think I've carried that burden since August 2014.

"It's nearly 11 years, and not just about winning my next major, but the career Grand Slam.

"Trying to join a group of five players to do it, you know, watching a lot of my peers get green jackets in the process," he added.

McIlory's victory puts him alongside Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, and Gary Player in the exclusive club.
