Doubts have been raised over Marcus Rashford's long-term future at Manchester United.

Rashford, 27, has struggled for consistency since signing a five-year contract worth £325,000 a week in the summer of 2023, managing just seven goals in the Premier League last season compared to 17 in the previous campaign.

He disappointed in the early weeks of the current season, with United's sluggish start costing Erik ten Hag his job as manager in October.

Rashford would have been hoping for a clean slate under new head coach Ruben Amorim and made promising start under the Portuguese, scoring three goals in his first three games working with the former Sporting boss.

But he was then dropped to the bench for their Premier League defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, raising doubts over whether Amorim views him as an integral member of the squad.

Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg has now claimed that the England international could be sold in January, revealing that United have already held talks over a potential transfer.

“Manchester United would sell Marcus #Rashford at the latest by the summer and would already be open to top offers in the winter," Plettenberg posted on X.

"The club acknowledge his development under Ruben #Amorim but consider him definitely not unsellable.

"One reason why a sale is being discussed: if he were to leave the club due to his very high salary, it would free up critical points in the complicated Financial Fair Play system, which, in turn, would give the Red Devils more room to maneuver in the transfer market.

"27 y/o with a contract until 2028."

Where could Rashford go?

Rashford has been strongly linked with French giants Paris Saint-Germain for a number of seasons.

The forward's representatives reportedly met with PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi in 2022, and the French club made another approach in 2023 before Rashford committed himself to United with his new long-term contract.

PSG were also interested in signing the forward as a replacement for Kylian Mbappe prior to his move to Real Madrid, although an official bid failed to materialise.

However, teamTALK claim PSG retain an interest in Rashford and could make an official approach next year.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also previously been linked with Rashford but United could be reluctant to sell to one of their biggest Premier League rivals.

What has Rashford said?

Manchester-born Rashford has always stated that he would prefer to remain with his boyhood club and win 'big trophies'.

"I think as you get older, your dreams change as well. So, you know, in the beginning it was just about playing for Man United," he told the club's website in the summer.

"And when you get there, it's about winning. So I still have, you know, dreams of winning the big trophies, the Premier League and Champions League with Man United.

"So, you know, hopefully we can get that done."

But with the club seemingly years away from challenging for the Premier League and Champions League, Rashford may seek a move elsewhere.
