Rio Ferdinand reveals what Man Utd players have told him about next manager after Erik ten Hag sacking

Rio Ferdinand reveals what Man Utd players have told him about next manager after Erik ten Hag sacking

The former Manchester United defender has had his say.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has had his say on Erik ten Hag’s sacking and has revealed what the United players have told him.

The Dutchman was relieved of his duties as United boss on Monday morning after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

The club confirmed the news in a statement posted to their official website, which read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

Ferdinand was one the first ex-United players to react to the news when he live-streamed his reaction [via Rio Presents] shortly after Ten Hag's departure was confirmed by the club.

“Was this always the plan that Ruud van Nistelrooy was going to be the guy to come in and take over the reins?” said Ferdinand.

“It seemed like that from the outset. It seemed like he was brought in to be that guy, but they played it down. I think the next press conference is going to be a real good one to see that.

“I think Ruud being asked to take on the interim role – what else can Ruud say? It is a dream-case scenario. This has played out the best way for him. He won’t tell us this, but this has played out the best way possible for him.

“Comes in denying any desires to be the manager, but he’s thinking if this guy [Ten Hag] doesn’t produce the goods, I’m sitting in the wings waiting. I think he brings a calming authority in the game, the players respect and like him.

“I spoke with a number of the players, and they love working with him so far. But it is always going to be different. When you’re the coach, there isn’t that same pressure.”

Van Nistelrooy will coach the team when they take on Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday October 30 before they host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday November 3.
