Man Utd have told Chelsea how much it'll cost to sign Kobbie Mainoo and the number looks like a typo

Chelsea are believed to be favourites to sign Manchester United prospect Kobbie Mainoo if he does not agree a new contract.

Manchester United have told Chelsea the surprise amount it will cost to sign Kobbie Mainoo amid a contract stalemate.

The 19-year-old enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign for the Red Devils last season, making 32 appearances and scoring five times from midfield - including the second goal in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

He was then one of England's best players at Euro 2024, making six appearances and starting in the final against Spain.

Mainoo is a boyhood United fan and came through the ranks at the club but on Tuesday it was reported that the two parties club are in a "stalemate" regarding a new deal.

It was also claimed that Mainoo is "concerned" by the direction the club, currently 13th in the Premier League, is going in.

Chelsea are believed to be leading the chase for Mainoo, who is out of contract in 2027 and said to be demanding fresh terms of £200,000-a-week.

Both he and fellow wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho are seen as two sellable assets for United as homegrown players represent pure profit on the balance sheet when it comes to PSR (profit and sustainability) rules.

Man United name price for Mainoo

According to The Mirror, only an offer in the region of £70 million would prompt United into seriously considering selling Mainoo.

Ruben Amorim wants the midfielder to stay and sees him as an important part of his plans. They are in talks about a new and improved deal, with Mainoo's representatives looking for him to enter United's top five earners after his meteoric rise.

Currently that top five is led by Casemiro, who earns £350,000-a-week - putting him just head of Marcus Rashford and his £325,000 pay packet.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is reported to collect £300,000-a-week, with Mason Mount paid £250,000-a-week after signing in 2023.

The report notes that United are confident they can come to an agreement with Mainoo that includes a major pay increase to outlines his importance to the club.

But Chelsea are firm favourites in the event that does not happen.

Making his debut in an Carabao Cup game against Charlton Athletic, Mainoo has played 52 times for United, scoring five goals. He finished third in the 2024 Kopa Trophy, won by Lamine Yamal.
