Erik ten Hag 'refused to answer' question from reporter involved in awkward Ruben Amorim moment

Erik ten Hag 'refused to answer' question from reporter involved in awkward Ruben Amorim moment

The reporter was told he would not be able to ask Ten Hag a question during the press conference.

Footage has resurfaced of Erik ten Hag refusing to answer questions from the same reporter that was involved in an awkward exchange with Ruben Amorim.

Ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League clash between Sporting and Manchester City, Amorim was accused of giving Manchester United fans the "cold shoulder" by not speaking English during his pre-match press conference.

The 39-year-old, who will officially join United on November 11, was asked a handful of questions in English but his press officer interrupted and said English journalists would get answers when he officially starts the role at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports reporter Gary Cotterill, however, was determined to get an answer in English. "You could be a hero even before you get on a plane to Manchester, has that crossed your mind?" he said, before asking Amorim he could answer the question in English.

Amorim then responded: "Mmm sorry, I cannot speak in English, no."

Since the awkward exchange took place, footage from a press conference involving Erik ten Hag has resurfaced, when the Dutchman refused to take questions from Cotterill ahead of Manchester United's clash against Southampton in 2022.

As you can see from the footage below, United's press officer chose another reporter to ask a question after the Sky reporter made an attempt to speak to Ten Hag.

In fact, Cotterill tried to ask Ten Hag three questions during the 15-minute press conference but was ignored, according to The Times.

The report added: "Cotterill believed that the snub stem from an attempt he made to speak to Ten Hag outside Selhurst Park last season, just after he had been appointed manager. Ten Hag refused to answer Cotterill’s questions then and was brushed aside by a security guard."

After the press conference, Cotterill commented on the incident. “I’m assuming he was offended by the thing at Palace but he was doing his job by not commenting and I was doing my job trying to get a comment," he said.

"I’m only guessing that was the reason. I haven’t been told. You saw what was said but I don’t think it would be too much of a leap to assume it was about that.”

A short time later, it was reported that Ten Hag offered to meet Cotterill to engage in clear-the-air talks.
