A furious Harry Maguire had to be held back as he confronted Kai Havertz during Sunday afternoon's heated FA Cup third round clash between Arsenal and Manchester United.

With the score at 1-1, referee Andy Madley pointed to the penalty spot after Havertz fell to the ground after he appeared to collide with Maguire’s outstretched arm.

Of course, VAR will only be used from the fifth round onwards, meaning Maguire's complaints to Madley and his officials fell on deaf ears as a huge melee erupted in North London.

As tensions boiled over, an enraged Maguire could be seen shouting in the direction of Havertz, who was dragged away from the scene by his Arsenal teammates.

Fans, meanwhile, think they have worked out what the Manchester United defender said in the 71st minute, with many believing he called the German forward a "cheat".

Here's how fans on social media reacted to the scenes.

One said: "Harry Maguire calling Kai Havertz a cheat. This referee has really lost the plot. Maybe VAR isn't so bad after all," while another wrote: "'You cheating s***house' from Maguire there. What a brilliant watch this is."

A third commented: "Maguire calling Havertz a cheat is spot on."

A fourth said: "It seems Harry Maguire was not happy with the decision involving Kai Havertz, calling him a cheat. The referee's decision definitely raised some eyebrows, making people wonder if VAR could have helped in this situation."

A fifth added: "United should walk off the pitch. Never seen a game so badly officiated. Disgusting."

After a lengthy delay at the Emirates, United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir produced a great save to deny Martin Odegaard as the game remained tied at 1-1.
