Man United have just set new Premier League record which will worry Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Man United have just set new Premier League record which will worry Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Manchester United have set an unwanted record which could have a huge impact on their transfer plans.

Manchester United cannot afford to go on a mammoth spending spree under Sir Jim Ratcliffe despite the new investment.

INEOS chief Ratcliffe has purchased a 25 per cent stake worth just over £1 billion in United and he and his team will take full charge of footballing operations.

Reports claim that United, who have also announced the arrival of incoming CEO Omar Berrada from rivals Manchester City, are looking to strengthen in four areas in the summer window.

But Erik Ten Hag is said to be restricted with what he can spend on new players due to United recently setting an unwanted club and Premier League record.

Finance expert Kieran Maguire claims that United still owe a record figure in transfer fees.

Deals are often done in instalments as opposed to cash up front and the sum has continued to increase at Old Trafford and so transfer plans are impacted greatly as a result.

“I’ve seen the documents – Manchester United’s transfer payables have increased to £364 million which is a record not only for the club but also for any club in the history of the Premier League,” Maguire said, speaking to Football Insider.

“If you owe a lot of money on a credit card, then going out and having another spending spree using that card is not always the best strategy.

“It does indicate that January 2024 could potentially involve cash going out of the club – but not for new signings.

“Also, when it comes to the summer of 2024, United will have significant financial commitments to other clubs in the shape of instalments for previous signings.“

The outlay on transfer fees in recent years hasn't been successful for United and it's emerged that Berrada is poised to introduce a new rule upon his arrival.

According to Fabrizio Romano, going forward if players are not performing after one or two years then they will be shown the exit door.
