Joshua Zirkzee issues statement after penalty miss in Man Utd's FA Cup defeat to Fulham as post-match footage emerges

Joshua Zirkzee failed to convert his penalty in the shootout against Fulham.

Joshua Zirkzee issued a statement after his penalty miss in Manchester United's FA Cup defeat to Fulham as post-match footage emerged on social media.

Man United were eliminated from the FA Cup as Fulham dumped the holders out of the competition following a 4-3 penalty shootout victory on Sunday.

Calvin Bassey opened the scoring just before the break as Bruno Fernandes levelled proceedings with a fine finish in the 71st minute.

The fifth round tie went into extra-time before going to penalties.

Six stunning penalties were converted before Victor Lindelof had his effort saved by Bernd Leno.

Antonee Robinson then slotted home before Zirkzee fluffed his lines from the spot to hand Fulham a famous victory at Old Trafford.

After his penalty miss, Zirkzee cut a devastated figure and was inconsolable as footage shows Fulham players attempting to console the Red Devils star.

The Dutchman slumped to his haunches as Ruben Amorim also came over to console the player.

Following the game, Zirkzee took to social media to release a statement on his side's FA Cup exit.

On his Instagram story, he wrote: "Sorry to let u down today reds! Thanks for the incredible support."

Amorim shared his views on the cup tie as he referenced Zirkzee.

Asked why his team are not converting chances, he replied: "I think it is sometimes the quality of the players... Bruno, Casemiro, Josh [Zirkzee] is improving a lot, he's fighting for every ball. It's the quality of the players which help us to create more chances."

He added: "The goal is to win the Premier League. I don't know how long it is going to take but that's our goal and no matter what we continue forward."

Man United return to action on Thursday when they face Real Sociedad in the Europa League before resuming their faltering Premier League campaign at home to Arsenal on Sunday.
