Jose Mourinho turned down the biggest Man Utd signing in history which could've saved his job at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho turned down the biggest Man Utd signing in history which could've saved his job at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho won three trophies during his time at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho reportedly rejected the chance to sign one player that could have saved his job at Manchester United.

The Special One was announced as United manager back in 2016 after Louis van Gaal was sacked on the back of winning the FA Cup final.

Mourinho won the FA Community Shield, the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League during his time at the helm.

This week, Mourinho will take on United again as his Fenerbahce side host the Red Devils in the Europa League.

According to talkSPORT presenter Jim White, Mourinho turned down the chance to sign Cristiano Ronaldo during his time in charge.

Speaking in 2022, White said: “Over the years there have been many discussions over Ronaldo's return to Manchester United. It might have happened when he finished at Real Madrid when he was still in his pomp.

“But it wasn’t possible because Jose Mourinho made it clear he at that time had other priorities.”

It was also revealed that Mourinho did not want a sporting director to work with him.

White added: “We understand that Mourinho refused the idea point blank of working with a sporting director.

“Man United made the offer to him and he said no, despite those inside the club feeling that there needed to be a change of direction.”

Speaking ahead of facing United, Mourinho said earlier in the week: “As you know, we won Europa League, we finished second in the Premier League.

“I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points.”

The Portuguese added: “And maybe we win that league and they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal!

“Honestly, I didn't lose one minute thinking about it. I wish the best to Manchester United since the moment I left. I left with a good feeling for the club and its fans and I want the best for them. If things aren't going amazingly well for them, it’s not something that makes me happy.”
