One Man Utd player went straight over to Jadon Sancho after missed penalty as unseen gesture spotted

Sancho was one of two Man Utd players to miss their spot kick in the Community Shield shootout.

One Manchester United player walked straight over to Jadon Sancho after he missed a penalty against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

City ultimately won the shootout 7-6, with Manuel Akanji scoring the decisive spotkick.

United were in pole position after Andre Onana saved from Bernardo Silva, but Sancho missed and the two teams went to sudden death.

The England winger, who was taking his first competitive penalty since the Euro 2020 final, aimed for the right corner of the goal but his effort was superbly tipped onto the post by Ederson.

A dejected Sancho walked back to the centre circle, though the 24-year-old was perhaps unfortunate that his penalty didn't go in off the post.

The Athletic reporter Carl Anka noted that one player walked straight over to Sancho to console him - captain Bruno Fernandes.

During the 90 minutes, the United skipper thought he had opened the scoring with a superb curling effort into the top right corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

He then successfully converted the first penalty of the shootout, but was unfortunately on the losing side as City secured the Community Shield.

Pep Guardiola's side won the trophy after losing the match to Arsenal last year, with the Premier League season getting underway next week.

Sancho, meanwhile, has played a key role in pre-season for Erik ten Hag's side after being restored to the first team.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund after a public dispute with his manager, but the pair resolved their differences at the beginning of the summer and the 24-year-old will hope to have a strong season at Old Trafford and bounce back from disappointment at Wembley.

United kick off their domestic league campaign on Friday when they host Fulham at Old Trafford.
