Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher get into their most heated debate yet when discussing Erik ten Hag's future at Man Utd

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher clashed when talking about Erik ten Hag.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher clashed when discussing Erik ten Hag's future at Manchester United following their crushing defeat to Liverpool.

Pressure is already mounting on Ten Hag, who has led his side to back-to-back defeats in the new Premier League season.

His team loss at Brighton before succumbing to fellow countryman Arne Slot as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford last weekend.

Ten Hag's future was under intense scrutiny towards the end of last season as he salvaged the 2023/24 campaign with FA Cup triumph over Manchester City.

But Man United had sounded out several managers before handing the Dutchman a new contract.

Speaking on The Overlap - brought to you by Sky Bet, Neville insists Man United couldn't find an 'unbelievable manager' to replace Ten Hag, which was disputed by Carragher as he referenced Champions League-winning coach Thomas Tuchel.

The former Red Devils captain then brought up Liverpool's supposed struggles to replace Jurgen Klopp, which was immediately challenged by Carragher as they spoke about Xabi Alonso, who turned down his old side's approach.

Roy Keane and Ian Wright, who were also on the episode, didn't know where to look as they hilariously watched on.

Neville: "I think what happened was after the cup final, they were shocked they won in the way they did. Secondly, I probably the sentiment in what happened the week after the cup final, United fans are incredibly loyal to all the managers full stop. They wanted Erik ten Hag to be backed and kept, they've seen enough managers turfed out over the last ten years and thinking it's not the manager that is the problem. Maybe it's the fact that there isn't structure at the club, there isn't a recruitment policy and why are we getting rid of another manager that was promising before he keeps and we've turned into a bad one?

"I think they sounded out around that time; Potter, Southgate, De Zerbi was mentioned, Tuchel. The mood music around that from the fans was probably negative so they were thinking we'll keep him. They were looking at it and assessing it, there is no doubt they were having a flirt around the market. Tuchel, he comes in and he's a bit transactional, he might leave after a couple of years and end up in the same position as maybe with Jose. With Southgate, Potter and De Zerbi, maybe there wasn't the mood from the fans. They've assessed it. If there was unbelievable manager available that they thought 100% could improve Manchester United beyond what they know Erik ten Hag, I think they would have done the transaction."

Carragher: "Who is the unbelievable manager?"

Neville: "My point is they couldn't find one Carra."

Carragher: "Thomas Tuchel is a Champions League winner."

Neville: "I did say this to you on Sunday, Liverpool wouldn't appoint Thomas Tuchel. Why didn't Liverpool appoint Thomas Tuchel? Liverpool had six months to replace Klopp and still found it quite challenging to get their no.1 and no.2 targets."

Carragher: "Who was the no.1 target? You said this Sunday and I never pulled you up on it. Where are you getting it from?"

Neville: "Oh my god! Fortunately, we do record Stick To Football. Fortunately, I do have a memory where you said they'd definitely be going for Xabi Alonso."

Carragher: "That's my opinion!"

Neville: "Oh my god! You're now all of sudden disconnected from Liverpool that you don't think they went for Xabi Alonso..."

Carragher: "I'm sure they did, and they were told straight away, no he's staying at Bayer Leverkusen."

Neville: "It wasn't straight away Carra, there was a distance of time between it."

Carragher: "You're saying that Liverpool had this big search, how do we know exactly what went on behind the scenes at Liverpool?"

Neville: "Right, we pretty much know they took a lot more time than they wanted."

Carragher: "Manchester United - why did they not employ Slot?"

Neville: "I think maybe they looked at Arne Slot, I haven't got a clue. But they probably would have looked at him and thought can we get rid of a guy who's got two trophies in two years? Who hasn't been backed by a proper structure..."

Carragher: "Backed by a proper structure? He's gone out and bought whoever he wanted! You're talking about a structure, that's taking power away from the manager, he's gone and bought whoever he wanted."

Neville: "It's pretty clear that the smartest football clubs at the top, tend to be the ones who are winning. Even Brighton at their level. What I'm saying is if Omar Berrada comes in, Dave Brailsford comes in, Dan Ashworth comes in, Jason Wilcox comes in and there's a complete sweep out of what's been there before. And they think we can provide a proper support structure to the manager, give him the right players and the right recruitment, give him the right advice when he needs it, maybe Erik ten Hag is not the problem here, maybe it's the club and how it's been in the last ten years. They can't all be bad managers, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, that's the conclusion they came to in the end. They didn't have a manager who they were certain enough to be able to trust."
