Gary Lineker and Micah Richards name the four Man Utd players good enough for any 'top six' side

Gary Lineker and Micah Richards name the four Man Utd players good enough for any 'top six' side

Both agreed that Bruno Fernandes would get into a 'top six' side.

Alan Shearer believes Gary Lineker and Micah Richards are "being generous" after they picked four Manchester United players who would get into a 'top six' side.

The trio recorded an episode of the Rest Is Football following Sunday afternoon's clash at Old Trafford, where United slumped to a humilating 3-0 defeat against Tottenham.

One of the big topics of conversation on the podcast was Erik ten Hag's future. "It’s hard to see him actually turning this around now isn’t it?" said Lineker, who questioned United's game plan on the pitch.

"He must be under terrible pressure. Who knows what the owners think, you never really know. We will see what happens in the next few days because there’s going to be some fallout from that particular performance."

After discussing the fallout from the weekend's game, former Blackburn and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer asked his fellow guests if anyone in Manchester United's XI from Sunday would get into a 'top six' side.

"[Kobbie] Mainoo gets in, in a top six side, definitely," said Micah Richards. who was full of praise for the midfielder after his performances for England at Euro 2024.

Lineker and Richards agreed that United captain Bruno Fernandes could play for a top six team, with Richards adding: "[Bruno] Fernandes when he's on song."

Fernandes, who has consistently been one of United's top performers since his arrival in 2020, has struggled in recent weeks but Erik ten Hag has backed the midfielder to quickly regain form in the coming weeks.

Going back to the podcast, Richards also brought up one of United's more inconsistent performers, saying: [Marcus] Rashford when he's at his best."

He added: "I would take [Lisandro] Martinez as well. Obviously he's been inconsistent with injuries and all that sort of thing, and that would be it Alan, if I'm being totally honest."

Shearer, meanwhile, appeared to disagree with the selections made. "I think you're being generous by the way." he smiled.

It has been a poor start to the campaign for the Reds. In fact, United's seven points are the club's joint-fewest after six games of a Premier League season.

They will be hoping to turn things around this week when they come up against FC Porto and Aston Villa.
