Man City star Rodri can break record vs Man Utd that has stood for 16 years

Man City star Rodri can break record vs Man Utd that has stood for 16 years

Rodri could make history on derby day.

Rodri could break a Premier League record that has stood for 16 years when Manchester City face Man United on Sunday.

Man City and neighbours United will go head-to-head at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in the 192nd Manchester derby.

Pep Guardiola's side need a win to keep pace with Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League title race, while United could do with the points in order to boost their hopes of securing European football for next season.

City are heavy favourites to win, and if they do, then one of their stars will create Premier League history.

Rodri is arguably the most important player in Guardiola's side, evidenced by the fact that City always struggle when he is absent.

After the Spaniard was sent off against Nottingham forest in September, City lost all three of the domestic games he missed through suspension.

When he does play, it's a completely different story.

Rodri has not lost a club game since City lost 1-0 to Tottenham in February 2023. Since then he has represented City on 58 occasions without tasting defeat.

As long as City don't lose to United then the midfielder will break the record for the longest 'invincible' streak of any Premier League player.

City's 1-0 win against Bournemouth last weekend saw Rodri draw level with former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho on 58 games without defeat.

The ex-Portugal star set that record between November 2006 and February 2008.

Rodri isn't the only player who could make history on Sunday.

Kevin De Bruyne could break Lionel Messi's record for the number of assists provided in Europe's top five leagues over the past decade.

City will be confident of winning the game: they are a much better team than United - who are missing several key players through injury - and haven't tasted defeat at the Etihad Stadium since Brentford beat them 2-1 in November 2022.

Erling Haaland has taken on the role of resident record-breaker since he joined the club, but this weekend it could be Rodri who makes history.
