Manchester City made more history on Wednesday night as they continued their dominance in Europe with a relatively straightforward 3-1 win over Danish side Copenhagen.

The reigning Champions League winners, who came into the second leg of their last-16 clash with a healthy lead following goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden, dominated from the get-go.

Manuel Akanji volleyed home from a corner to give Pep Guardiola's side a one-goal advantage at the Etihad and just four minutes later, Julian Alvarez made it 5-1 on aggregate.

Copenhagen managed to pull one back through former Southampton man Mohamed Elyounoussi but the inevitable Erling Haaland regained City's two-goal lead with a clinical finish.

As a result of his goal, Haaland equalled Sergio Aguero's Champions League tally of 41 goals. In fact, the Norwegian forward is now the 19th top scorer in European Cup history after just 37 games played.

After City made it three before the half-time whistle, it emerged that last season's winners are the first side in major European competition history to score three or more goals in nine consecutive home matches.

They also went on to become the first English side to win 10 consecutive matches in the competition.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's game in his pre-match press conference, Haaland said he has the "taste" for winning trophies after last season's treble-winning campaign.

“You can think about it in two ways,” he said. “One thing, I came here and won it all, and the other thing, I'm 23 years old and I won everything and I got the taste of it, how it is to win everything.

“How I work is that when I feel this is, I want to win it again. Easy as that.”

Haaland, who is the Champions League's joint top scorer this season with six goals, also played down rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

"I am really happy,” he added. “Especially with the people that I am surrounded with: the manager, the directors, the board. I am really happy.

“If I say this now it will probably be a massive headline: you never know what the future brings but I am happy."

When asked about potentially signing a contract extension at City, the former Borussia Dortmund forward replied: "I focus on the pitch, there is a lot of games. I think I should focus on that."
