Erling Haaland signs one of the longest contracts in football history as Man City tie striker down to historic deal

Erling Haaland signs one of the longest contracts in football history as Man City tie striker down to historic deal

The City forward has extended his stay at the Etihad by signing a stunning new deal.

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has penned an extraordinary new contract at the club.

Haaland, 24, was set to see his current deal expire in the summer of 2027 having previously penned a five-year deal when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund in July 2022.

Now, he has signed a new nine-and-a-half-year agreement with the Premier League champions according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Haaland will be 34 years old by the time his new contract expires and any release clauses from his previous deal have been removed.

The exact figures involved are unclear at this time. But it is thought to be one of the “most lucrative sporting contracts ever”.

According to Capology, Haaland's current deal means he is the club's second-highest earner (£375,000 per week) with Kevin De Bruyne pipping him to top spot with a hefty salary of £400,000 per week. And with the Belgian's current deal set to expire in June of this year, this could see Haaland overtake him as City's highest earner.

This may also see him become the Premier League's highest-paid player.

Of course, despite Pep Guardiola's side being in poor form for much of the season, the Norwegian forward has still managed to score 21 goals in 28 games in all competitions with 16 strikes coming in the league.

The 24-year-old will no doubt back himself to become the Premier League's all-time record goalscorer.

Currently, former Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle striker, Alan Shearer, leads the way with 260 goals in the division.

Haaland, who has won the golden boot award in the last two seasons, has scored 79 goals in the top flight.

This means he is 180 goals away from passing Shearer, 54. Essentially, if Haaland fulfils his full nine-and-a-half year deal, he will need to average 19 goals per season in the next nine and a half campaigns.

Longest ever contracts in football

In recent seasons, the length of contracts signed by players has increased. In the summer of 2024, Chelsea's Cole Palmer penned a new deal at Stamford Bridge set to run until 2033 which extended his stay by two years, taking his overall contract length to nine years.

The Blues also handed Enzo Fernandez a nine-year contract when he arrived from Benfica in 2023. Also in 2023, the west London-based side signed Mykhailo Mudryk, giving the player a eight-and-a-half year deal.
