Alan Shearer reacts to Erling Haaland's new contract with Premier League goals record under major threat

Alan Shearer reacts to Erling Haaland's new contract with Premier League goals record under major threat

The 54-year-old is currently top of the all-time leading goalscorer list for the Premier League.

Alan Shearer has had his say on Erling Haaland’s extraordinary new contract – and his Premier League all-time top goalscorer record could be under threat.

Haaland, 24, has penned a new nine-and-a-half-year deal, which will keep him at Manchester City until the summer of 2034.

By then, Haaland will be 34 and at the end of his 12th season at City, having signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.

And given the fact he has won the Premier League Golden Boot – awarded to the league’s top goalscorer each season – in the past two seasons, he could be in contention to break Shearer’s long-standing record.

Shearer, 54, played for Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle during his career and netted 260 goals across 14 seasons. While Haaland currently boasts 79 Premier League goals in 87 appearances since arriving in 2022.

In the league, Haaland has a scoring ratio of almost a goal per game as reported by BBC Sport.

If Haaland were to average 20 goals per season across the next ten campaigns he would reach Shearer’s record before the expiration of his new deal.

Of course, football can change. Haaland could move clubs before the end of his contract or even sustain major injuries which could jeopardise his chances of smashing the record.

Now, Shearer has finally broken his silence, posting to X on Friday morning.

"Congratulations Erling Haaland," he wrote alongside two 'clapping' emojis.

"Nine and a half years? It surely shouldn’t take you that long?"

Haaland has not responded to Shearer's well wishes but did express his "thanks" to Pep Guardiola for his "help" over the past few years, which no doubt influenced his decision to sign a new deal.

"I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club," said Haaland.

"Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters and it's the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.

"I also want to thank [manager] Pep [Guardiola], his coaching staff, my team-mates and everyone at the club as they have all helped me so much in the past couple of years."
