The Spaniard was a key part of the Reds' 2005 Champions League winning side and given his legendary status it's not a surprise he's a top candidate to succeed Klopp.
Klopp's decision to leave gives Liverpool a perfect opportunity to swoop in and sign Alonso who has been linked with several different clubs in the past including Real Madrid.
Not only is he the early bookies favourite to takeover at Anfield, but rumours have surfaced suggesting he has a special clause in his Leverkusen contract that would allow him to leave for one of his former clubs.
In a recent interview, CEO Fernando Carro rebuffed claims that such a clause exists, but insisted the club have a great relationship with Alonso and wouldn't make him stay if he wanted to leave.

Ben Jacobs reported that "Carro told me there's no clause allowing him to leave for LFC but added 'sometimes agreements that aren't on paper are agreements as well.'"

He's received a lot of praise for his style of play, a progressive 3-4-3 formation and quality of possession which allows them to dictate games similarly to how Alonso did during his playing career.
Alonso's transformation of Leverkusen this season has been remarkable with signings such as Granit Xhaka, Alex Grimaldo and Victor Boniface key to the success.
