Virgil van Dijk drops huge bombshell on his Liverpool future after Netherlands exit Euro 2024

Virgil van Dijk drops huge bombshell on his Liverpool future after Netherlands exit Euro 2024

Van Dijk's comments have sparked concern among Liverpool fans.

Virgil van Dijk has dropped a potentially major bombshell on his Liverpool future after the Netherlands exited Euro 2024 at the semi-final stage.

Ronald Koeman's side were dumped out of the tournament following a 2-1 defeat to England in Dortmund, with Ollie Watkins scoring an injury time winner to break Dutch hearts.

Van Dijk was left furious after the game following referee Felix Zwayer's decision to award England a controversial penalty in the first half.

Contact between Harry Kane and Denzel Dumfries as the former got a shot away was the cause of the penalty, with Dutch players left furious that Zwayer gave it after a VAR monitor review.

But Liverpool fans will be more concerned by Van Dijk's comments surrounding his short and long-term future at club and international level.

He said: "I haven't the slightest idea [about my future] right now.

"I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player, then we'll go for it again."

Van Dijk is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Liverpool, and he is the current club captain as the Reds prepare for life under new manager Arne Slot.

The comments appear to contradict those made back in May - before Jurgen Klopp’s exit - in which he stated he wanted to aid Liverpool’s transition into the new regime this season.

He said: “There will be a big transition, and I am part of that.

“I think the club is very much busy with who is going to be the new manager, and that is the main focus.

“Like I said, I am very happy here. I love the club, and you can see that as well.

“It’s a big part of my life already, and that is all I can say.”
