Liverpool to pay record-breaking fee for wonderkid in problem position THIS MONTH and it's bad news for current Reds player

Liverpool are prepared to pay a record-breaking fee to bring a new player to the club in January, according to reports - and it could be bad news for a current Reds star.

Arne Slot's side are currently six points clear at the top of the Premier League table - with a game in hand - and reached the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday with a 4-0 win over League Two side Accrington Stanley.

The Dutchman decided to rest several key players for the victory but still put a strong side out, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominic Szoboszlai both starting.

Another player that started at Anfield was striker Darwin Nunez, who has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks over his lack of goals this season.

The Uruguayan failed to score again, blasting an effort over the bar and being the subject of heavy criticism from Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler both before and after the match.

Nunez has been linked with a move away from Liverpool since the opening of the January transfer window, with claims that Italian giants AC Milan are interested in signing him on loan with an option to buy.

He has also been linked with a potential move to the Saudi Pro League, where he would join former Liverpool team-mate Fabinho.

But Liverpool have reportedly already lined up his replacement.

According to Anfield Watch, the Reds are looking to tie up what appears to be a complicated deal to sign Greece youth international forward Stefanos Tzimas.

The 19-year-old plays his club football for PAOK but is currently on loan at Bundesliga 2 side FC Nurnberg, where he has eight goals in 14 league appearances so far this season.

The German club are said to have an option to buy clause worth £15 million as part of the loan contract, which would need to be waived in order for a move to Liverpool to be completed.

It is claimed that Liverpool are keen to match PAOK's new asking price of £25 million - a record-breaking transfer fee for a Greek player - to sign Tzimas, having met with the striker's agents last week.

The report adds that his move is 'tied' to the future of Nunez - meaning the Uruguay international will have to leave Anfield for a double transfer to be completed.

Tzimas has recently been linked with moves to Manchester United and Brighton, and would give Arne Slot another forward option as his side approaches the Premier League season run-in.
