Liverpool register 'strong interest' in £37m player who will be available on free transfer in the summer

Liverpool register 'strong interest' in £37m player who will be available on free transfer in the summer

Liverpool have reportedly identified Arne Slot's third signing.

Liverpool have reportedly registered strong interest in a key transfer target - with the player being available on a free transfer in the summer.

New Reds manager Arne Slot only completed one permanent transfer in the summer, with winger Federico Chiesa joining from Juventus for a fee of £12.7 million.

Liverpool did also secure a deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, but he is spending the season back on loan at the Spanish side and will move to Anfield next summer.

The club's senior hierarchy has a number of contract headaches to deal with, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah all out of contract in the summer.

While reports claim that the Reds are close to an agreement with club captain Van Dijk, the futures of Alexander-Arnold and Salah are less clear.

Now, it is reported that Liverpool have registered a 'strong interest' in signing another attacker.

InterLive.it (via Sport Witness) report that Inter Milan are chasing the signature of Lille striker Jonathan David who, like the above trio, is out of contract in the summer of 2025.

But there is also said to be interest from Juventus and Liverpool in signing the Canada international star, who can also play out wide if required.

That versatility could appeal to Liverpool and Slot, with Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Darwin Nunez all capable of playing across the front line.

David is valued at £37 million on Transfermarkt, despite his five-year contract that he originally signed upon joining Lille in 2020 due to expire.

That situation means that Lille may have to sell the 24-year-old for a cut-price fee on January, though David himself can override those intentions by signing a pre-contract with another club.

Liverpool's rivals Manchester United found it difficult to deal with the French club in the summer during negotiations for 18-year-old defender Leny Yoro, but they eventually agreed on a £52 million fee to bring the centre-back to Old Trafford.

But there may be another stumbling block if the Reds attempt to sign David - even on a free transfer.

According to The Sun, West Ham pulled out of negotiations to sign the striker due to an astonishing proposal of £10 million in agent fees, which the Hammers decided they were unwilling to pay.

But David is a proven goalscorer in Ligue 1, having netted 43 goals in his last two completed seasons, and already has five goals in eight games - including a hat-trick in a 3-0 away win at Le Havre - to kick off the 2024/25 campaign.
