Darwin Nunez's 'humble' message to Virgil van Dijk after scoring winner vs. RB Leipzig has got fans talking

Darwin Nunez's 'humble' message to Virgil van Dijk after scoring winner vs. RB Leipzig has got fans talking

Nunez netted the winner for Liverpool in their Champions League clash against Leipzig.

Darwin Nunez further endeared himself to the Liverpool faithful on Wednesday evening after he was spotted having a word with Virgil van Dijk during their 1-0 win over RB Leipzig.

Arne Slot's side maintained their unbeaten start to their Champions League group stage campaign with a solid victory against Bundesliga high-flyers Leipzig.

Liverpool's Player of the Match Caoimhin Kelleher had to be at his scintillating best to stop the German side, who looked dangerous in spells.

But the in-form Reds secured all three points after Darwin Nunez tapped home from a Mohamed Salah header, which looked to be heading goal bound before the Uruguayan stuck out his right boot.

Moments later, Liverpool's goalscorer was congratulated by captain Virgil van Dijk but rather than lap up the applause, Nunez pointed at Salah before saying: “No, its Mo."

Van Dijk then appeared to say "we need more" as he slapped his teammates' chest.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to the scenes.

One said: "I like Nunez' mentality, he never gives up. Always holds his head high. Even with all his mistakes and chaos," and another commented: "Nunez is such a lovely guy."

A third wrote: "And Virgil says no it's yours. I think it was going to hit the post. I want my number 9 to make sure of everything," while a fourth added: "Great mentality."

For the first time in their history, Liverpool have now won 11 of their opening 12 games in a season. In fact, the Reds have won their first six away games in a season for the first time.

Speaking after Liverpool's 2-1 win over Chelsea at the weekend, Daniel Sturridge praised Slot for allowing his team to stay at home the day before a game.

"I think it's refreshing," he said on Sky Sports. "I'm not gonna say Arne Slot is not demanding, everybody knows how demanding Jurgen was - both on the pitch and off the pitch.

"Being home the day before the game is a different mindset for the players and they can feel more relaxed just being at home sometimes.

"I think, all in all, the players of course are buying into the manager - I think his personality comes across very well.

"Whatever he's doing behind the scenes is clearly work and long may it continue."
