A contender for bet of the year emerged on Saturday night after Darwin Nunez scored a late brace for Liverpool in their dramatic 2-0 win over Brentford.

Nunez, who has been linked with a big-money move to Saudi Arabia this week, netted two goals in injury time as Arne Slot's side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points.

The 25-year-old forward provided "energy and power" after replacing Luis Diaz in the 65th minute, according to Slot, as he handed Liverpool a victory that could prove vital at the end of the season.

“Most of our games are the last half hour in control around 18 yards, and that’s where he [Nunez] is at his best," the Liverpool manager said after the full-time whistle.

"The first hour is often open but the last 30 minutes dominant. Then to have someone like Darwin is nice to have."

Shortly after Nunez's heroics at the Gtech, X user @Dutton_1986 posted a screenshot of the bets he'd placed for this weekend's game.

The punter placed a £10 stake on Nunez to not only be booked against Brentford, but score two or more goals in the match – a bet builder that was given odds of 180/1.

As well as the above that returned £1,810, the punter won £520 after putting £20 on Nunez to score anytime in the match and receive a booking.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to the bet.

One said: "That’s some magic that mate," while another commented: "Unbelievable shout that well in."

A third wrote: "Had the same yesterday but with Amad. Bloke scores a hat-rick and never took his shirt off."

A fourth said: "Must’ve went absolutely mental when he took his shirt off for the celebration hahaha fairs," and a fifth added: "This is insane. Fair play."

Speaking after the full-time whistle on Saturday night, Arne Slot was full of praise for his players.

“If we had not scored today then the headlines would have been ‘Liverpool drop points – AGAIN," he said.

“No-one would have told you we had 37 shots. What a display! How many teams were able to have 37 shots against Brentford? And now, because of us scoring two, the emphasis will be on that.

“But this is the industry we work in. We all accept and understand that there’s a lot of focus if it doesn’t go well, and not as much on the fact if you give a great performance. It’s about winning and losing - and not whether you play beautiful football."

Slot added: “People only enjoy beautiful football if you win. Otherwise there’s no focus at all on the performance."
