Liverpool have a new bizarre corner kick routine under Arne Slot

The strange new corner routine could be massive for Liverpool's season.

Liverpool fans have notice the strange corner kick routine used by Arne Slot in the preseason match against Sevilla.

Arne Slot's first match at Anfield since becoming Liverpool manager in May got underway on August 11 against La Liga side Sevilla.

The match ended 4-1 to the Reds, with several players impressing including Luis Diaz, who scored a brace, and Diogo Jota and Trey Nyoni who netted the other two goals for the Merseyside club.

And during the game, fans noticed the strange new corner kick routine that has been implemented by the new manager.

As pointed out by journalist Lewis Steele on X, the routine starts with all players huddling together around the back corner of the box, on the side that the corner kick will come in from.

Then, as soon as the ball is kicked, the whole team rush into the box, creating controlled chaos which leaves the opposing defenders unsure on who to mark.

If done successfully, several key players will be left almost entirely unmarked, giving them a good chance to make contact with the ball and score from the set piece.

This exact scenario almost played out in the match with Sevilla, as a corner kick taken in the 60th minute used this routine and allowed Virgil van Dijk, who perhaps has the best header in the squad, to make a connection with the ball after he was left relatively unmarked.

While in this case, the Liverpool captain was unable to score from the corner, the squad will still be developing this routine and it is likely to improve as they continue to use it throughout the upcoming Premier League season.

Diogo Jota scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-1 victory over Sevilla in pre season.
Diogo Jota scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-1 victory over Sevilla in pre season.

And speaking after the game, first goalscorer Jota revealed the intensity of life at the club under the new manager.

He said: “I think we worked hard, it’s sunny today, it’s very hot.

“Obviously it’s always good to work under victories and although we conceded a goal I think it was a good performance overall.

“New man on the touchline and everyone needs to adapt. I think we are working well, he is demanding.

“Even with a 4-1 win he was telling us what we need to improve and do better. So, I think that’s the way forward. I think we have played well in this pre-season, but we all know where it counts is next week."
