Why Liverpool can afford Alexander Isak despite spending more than £280m already this summer

The Premier League champions are still able to sign the Newcastle striker despite their huge spending spree

Experts have explained why Liverpool can still afford to buy Alexander Isak despite already spending more than £280m already in this summer's transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, Isak has asked to leave Newcastle this summer, amid speculation linking him with a move to Anfield.

But if Arne Slot wants to bring the Swede Liverpool would need to break the British transfer record.

They have already been very active in this summer's window, but still have the financial room to make more signings.

They have benefitted from their decision to not spend heavily last summer, with Federico Chiesa their only arrival for £13m.

But that did not impact Arne Slot's men on the pitch, as they cruised to the Premier League title.

That triumph brought them £174.9m in prize money, giving them a huge financial boost.

What about PSR?

For most Premier League clubs, Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are now the biggest restriction in the transfer market.

The rules limit clubs to losses of £105m over a rolling three-year period, or they face punishment.

The Premier League has shown it is willing to hand out points deductions for breaches, as Nottingham Forest and Everton found out.

But Liverpool fans do not have to worry.

TBR Football have reported that they have also benefitted from FSG's decision to renew the £350m revolving credit facility which was due to expire this month.

They extended the facility by £50m, despite them not borrowing any money.

Theoretically, the club therefore have an extra £90m to spend under the PSR rules.

Even if Liverpool signed Isak for an astronomical £150m, that fee would be amortised over five years, meaning only £30m would hit the accounts this year.

Why have Liverpool embarked on a spending spree?

It has been a clear statement of intent so far this summer

The chief executive Billy Hogan said the transfer market is key to lay down a marker.

He told The Athletic: "It’s a huge credit to everyone on the football side and the business side, working together every single day to ensure we got to that point.

"We also recognise, having won the English league title for the 20th time, that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"We want to make sure that we are behaving like one."

Who else have Liverpool signed this summer?

On Wednesday, Liverpool completed the signing of Newcastle's top target Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m.

He was the club's second attacking addition after the 22-year-old German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m including add-ons.

They have also signed replacements for the legendary Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold at full-back.

Milos Kerkez arrived from Bournemouth for £40m, while Jeremie Frimpong joined for £29.5m from Bayer Leverkusen.

The goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has also signed from Valencia for a deal which could rise to £29m.

Although the deal was agreed last summer, the Georgian spent the campaign in Spain, before moving to Merseyside this summer.
